The PURPOSE of the Church is to bind together followers of Jesus Christ for the purpose of sharing in the worship of God and in making His will dominant in the lives of all people, individually and collectively, especially as that will is set forth in the life, teachings, death and living presence of Jesus Christ. The GOVERNMENT of this Church is vested solely in its members of legal age. It recognizes and sustains the obligations of mutual counsel and cooperation as commonly expressed by Congregational Christian Churches through the free fellowship or association with similarly. AFFILIATIONS OF THIS CHURCH This Church is a voluntary member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches and of The Michigan Conference of Congregational Christian Churches. A Church with a history and a plan for the future This is a Church with a long history in Lansing. Founded in 1864, the Church's "meeting house" was, for many years, located downtown. After a devastating fire in 1971 that reduced the Church's building to ash, the decision to relocate was made. Debate on the building's design was extensive, finally being resolved in the adoption of the Alden Dow Associates' plan for a centrum design. The building committee was resolved to "build a building representative of today's culture and people to carry and promote Plymouth's programs into future years." This gracious and untraditional edifice continues to be a place where the worship of God and service of Christ remain paramount. The arts have always played an important part in Plymouth's life. There are many fine pieces of art in the rooms and on the walls. Plymouth has also long been noted for its commitment to music in the service of God. An extraordinary array of musical artists continue to give their talent in praise of God, often in concert with the Church's superior Casavant and antiphonal organs.
Covenant of this Church We are banded together as a Christian Church to maintain the worship of God; to proclaim the gospel of Christ; to develop in all people a consciousness of their relations and duties to God and to each other; and to inspire them with love for truth, passion for righteousness, and enthusiasm for service. To this end, we pledge our loyalty to Christ and covenant with each other to strive to express His spirit in our individual and corporate lives; to live together as Christians; to submit ourselves to the government of this church, working, giving, praying for its increase, its purity, its peace; and to seek in every way to make it a power for the building of the Kingdom of God. |
